Stenciling and Dyeing in Japan

May 15, 2015

I was fortunate to attend a textile workshop in Japan recently for two weeks. The focus was on indigo--learning how to keep a vat, make sure it's healthy and various traditional Japanese shibori and stenciling techniques to create surface design prior to dyeing. These photos are from when we stenciled and dyed. The dye initially is green when removed from the vat. Once it oxidizes, it turns blue. I made an eye glass case from this project.
